Frottage Clouds
Ernst’s frottage makes the surface of woods breathe. I gave life to my tree frottage series by turning them into surreal clouds. I grasped the pattern on the surface of the trees, but on a more fragile and light surface that I used tracing paper. When multiple layers of the frottage are overlaid, some sections give hints of the patterns beneath it. The buoyancy of these charcoal frottage drawings have connections to soft clouds that continuously move and cover the sky. I also referred to Leo Saul Berk’s omnibus layout of his drawing when it came to organizing the form of my frottage series. To give a bit of order and rhythm throughout the abstract group, I added a red embroidery thread to highlight the outline of clouds.
