Memory Drawing: Our Homes

All You Can Art Project at de Kunsthal, Rotterdam

Work for S. Ghede and her family

The book is a collection of drawings of memories of different homes I lived in, as well as the space I was sitting at in Sarah’s home.

This is part of the All You Can Art project at the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam. The project was based on each artist’s interaction with and reflection on visiting different local homes, organizations, schools, or families in the area of Rotterdam. Each family had one painting from the Kunsthal. I based my project on the conversations I had with the family of Sarah from Gemaal op Zuid. We discussed about the Dutch government’s plan on gentrifying the south of Rotterdam, and how that would impact every individual living in the area profoundly. A space to live is one of the immediate basic needs; being removed from one’s home forcedly means the foundation of an individual shaking unstably. Despite all the difficult situations, Sarah said that we should find the art in anything we do or create - whether it is cooking, gardening, or repositioning the furniture. Even if such situations bring us down, we still find hope in our everyday life. With this in mind, I wanted to pay homage to my previous spaces that hold dear memories of my past. I based my colors on the tones of green and brown I saw from Sarah’s place and did the drawings blindfolded to focus on the image I have in my head. I used embroidery to emphasize several details and spend more time with the memories of each corner of the spaces.
